Artist: Of Ennui
Label: Unsigned/Self-Release
Release Date: September 13, 2016
EP Name: “All Things Bad & Mean”

Local “shoegaze” band emerging from Chula Vista, Of Ennui provides a psychedelic blends of influences and sounds that you never knew you needed in your life.

Formed in 2015 by Christian Cate and Brian Strauss, both on guitar and vocals, the band is rounded out by Indigo Machado on drums, and Angus Garcia on bass. Although they credit several influences of different genre’s, such as punk rock artists Jawbreaker and iconic shoegaze band My Bloody Valentine, an element of each group really shines through on their debut EP, All Things Bad & Mean.

Released September of 2016, this collection of songs is definitely a far cry from the “surf-punk” vibes that echo through California, San Diego in particular, but do provide a much needed breath of fresh air. After listening to the EP, I can confidently say that I’ve fallen in love with this sub-genre of indie rock. If the dreamy guitar riffs cloaked in distortion aren’t enough, you’ll be sold the moment the vocals drop, swirling among the steady crash of drums and percussions. The band, putting an emphasis on the songs, “Delta of Venus” and “Sad Boy,” channel an undertone of neo-psychedelia with their ethereal and washed over lyrics, and ever-present rings of distortion through verses. The drums specifically made a vivid impression, adding layers and complexity to the already individual sound known as Of Ennui.

Make sure to check out all their tracks, listed through Bandcamp, and keep up on their socials for upcoming shows and more.
