A Night of Pure Alchemy: Bob Moses, Cannons, and Oxis at The Shell

The Rady Shell transformed into a sold-out sanctuary for a bill that felt curated specifically for the San Diego skyline. On a day that reminded everyone why this city holds its reputation for perfect weather, the energy shifted from the bright indie-pop of the afternoon into a deep, driving electronic headliner. This was the final date of Bob Moses’ Afterglow Tour, and the evening possessed a specific weight that only happens when the venue, the atmosphere, and the artists align for a definitive closing chapter.

Oxis: The Art of the Subtle Entrance
LA artist Oxis opened the afternoon, asserting herself as a vital talent who sat naturally on this bill. Her set thrived on texture, weaving through original tracks that matched the venue’s expansive acoustics. The most striking moment arrived during her rendition of “Mr. Brightside.” By reimagining The Killers’ anthem with such subtle, understated phrasing, she forced the audience to lean in; it took a full minute for the collective realization of the cover to ripple through the crowd.

Cannons: A Tight, Charismatic Surge
As the light shifted, Cannons took the stage with a level of precision that signaled a band at their absolute peak. Lead singer Michelle Joy operated with effortless charisma, navigating the stage with a fluid energy that kept the crowd locked in. She spent the set interacting heavily with the front row, singing directly to the fans who have followed them to this milestone performance. This was the tightest, most cohesive set we have ever seen the band deliver.

Bob Moses: The Zenith of the Evening
While Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance have always anchored Bob Moses, their current touring configuration brings a visceral weight to their studio polish. Flanked by live drummer Joe Zizzo and guitarist Julio Tavarez, the band sounded impeccable. The production featured backdrops and visuals that maintained a sharp balance, augmenting the music rather than distracting from the musicianship.
The Shell, the night, and the headlining status made this performance feel extra special compared to their previous festival appearances. The duo even took a moment to acknowledge their history in the city, giving a shout-out to the Music Box for their 2016 show. During the set, “Tearing Me Up” sparked a particularly emotional moment; hearing that older track live again immediately pulled the audience back to a beautiful place and time. The peak of the night, however, came from an entirely unexpected direction: a heavy, driving rendition of Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer.” The cover caught the entire venue off guard, sparking a wild reaction as the band traded their usual melodic house for something much darker and more aggressive. It was a mind-blowing highlight that nobody saw coming.
Bob Moses remains a San Diego favorite because they have mastered the rare transition from late-night club fixtures to captivating performers without losing their soul. Their ability to evolve their live show while staying anchored to the deep, emotive songwriting that first put them on our radar ensures their longevity. After a night like this, it is clear why they are a band we will seek out time and time again; beyond the setlist, they curated an experience that will stay with us until next time we see them.
