Mint Field and San Pedro el Cortez prove that Tijuana has a great music scene. The show saw a good crowd that was eager to hear tunes from across the border.
San Pedro El Cortez
San Pedro el Cortez kept the energy high from beginning to end. The quartet is a great example of what a garage rock band should sound like. Distorted guitars kept brushing while bassist Edgard Collins shouted into the mic and pulled off sweet bass lines simultaneously. After a couple of songs, guitarist Diego Córdoba took over lead vocals and performed the ideal garage jam “Poder Crudo (Al Cien)“. Towards the end of their set, drummer Mario Alarcón switched with the bassist for one song. Stumbling, he grabbed the bass guitar and started playing with the group, trying to keep balance the whole time. Even intoxicated, Alarcón kept everything tight and played very well despite falling to the floor. All members were having a great time on stage and was reciprocated by the crowd.
Mint Field immediately changed the mood. After the members laid flowers in a candid manner on stage, guitarist Estrella Sánchez and the bassist created relaxing ambiance with cool delay effects while drummer Amor Amezcua was setting up. Amezcua gave the signal when she was ready and the entire band jumped into their first song, still using the same melody from the chill intro. The smooth transition brought a full and pretty shoegazy sound that kept going throughout the band’s set. Most of the songs played that night were brand new, but some familiar tunes were heard like the first track off the Primeras Salidas EP. As their set progressed, their slow, spacey music gradually became faster with each song. Towards the end, it was clear how tight the band was with Amezcua showing off more complex drumming in her fills. Everyone was in harmony that night: the bassist held onto strong bass notes and Sánchez delivered perfect timing with her delay and echo guitar pedals while Amezcua was keeping it all together with her simple yet tasteful drumming.
