We ran across the San Diego-based trio Buddha Trixie when they opened for surf punk band The Frights a few weeks back at SOMA.
The high energy, youthful enthusiasm and overall sound these three high school seniors packed was impressive. We caught up with Daniel Cole, the band’s singer/drummer to learn more.
How did Buddha Trixie meet?
Daniel: The three of us were born and raised in San Diego. We were friends in elementary school, but it wasn’t until middle school that I joined the band on account of my hyperactivity tendencies to drum on desks and sing in class. Beforehand, Andrew and Dennis were just friends who would play guitar in Andrew’s garage. Eventually, Dennis found his calling on the bass guitar and has been slapping it like a delirious funky priest ever since.
What’s your favorite part of being involved in the San Diego music scene? What do you wish was different?
Daniel: Living in San Diego is great simply because of how lively the music scene is. There are plenty of concerts, venues, artists, radio stations, and producers. You’re never at a loss of music in San Diego. At the same time though, this does make it harder to gain popularity as a band. There are so many musicians in San Diego that you really have to turn heads to get some attention.
What bands/artists inspire your sound?
Daniel: Beach House, Portugal, the Man., The xx, Tame Impala, Grizzly Bear, Band of Horses, The Flaming Lips, M83, Deerhunter, Cults, Best Coast, Arcade Fire, Jimi Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Pixies, Radiohead, and The Black Keys.
If Buddha Trixie could open for any band, who would it be?
Daniel: Portugal. The Man
What city/venue is your dream show location?
Daniel: Coachella.
What’s next for your band? Where do you hope to be in one year?
Daniel: At the moment we’re working on producing our debut album at the San Diego Art Institute. We’re touching it up with some mixing, harmonies, and layering, but for the most part, the album was recorded in live takes. We hope to release it soon. And since we’re more than likely going to make it a free download, we totally recommend following us on Soundcloud or Facebook so you can get that free music.
