Caribou, Fcukers and Purple Disco Machine
As San Diego’s Waterfront Park once again becomes a nexus for electronic music’s varied currents, the CRSSD Fall lineup presents a curated cross-section of the contemporary landscape. Beyond the headliners, certain artists offer performances that promise to be more than just memorable—they are essential. Here are three such acts whose sonic architecture demands your attention.
Caribou
Dan Snaith’s Caribou project has long operated at the intersection of the cerebral and the visceral, crafting albums that reward deep listening and live shows that command pure physical response. The current iteration of his performance is a meticulously calibrated audio-visual experience, where the intricate polyrhythms and warm, melancholic synth pads of his records are rendered with startling clarity and force. Witnessing the set at Primavera Sound Porto this summer was to see this studio precision blossom into something raw and cathartic. It’s a testament to Snaith’s status as a master craftsman, capable of constructing a sound that is at once emotionally resonant and flawlessly executed on a grand scale.

Fcukers
Tapping into the fertile ground where post-punk’s jagged edges meet dance music’s rhythmic imperative, New York’s Fcukers feel thrillingly of the moment. Their sound is a frenetic melange of driving, often minimalist basslines, yelped vocals, and wiry guitar hooks that feel both indebted to their city’s specific no-wave lineage and defiantly new. In a festival environment saturated with polish, their performance offers a jolt of vital, sweat-drenched immediacy. A standout discovery from the European festival circuit, the Ninja Tune signees’ infectious swagger and hook-laden arrangements have affirmed their place in a new vanguard of ascendant acts who eschew self-seriousness for pure, kinetic energy.
Purple Disco Machine
While some producers chase the ephemeral whims of the zeitgeist, Tino Piontek’s Purple Disco Machine remains a pillar of the contemporary disco-house revival, demonstrating an unwavering dedication to the craft of the unabashedly joyous groove. His recent, large-scale FNGRS CRSSD performance was a compelling case study, transcending the typical DJ set to become a high-gloss spectacle with live vocalists and choreographed elements. This maximalist approach underscores his music’s core appeal: a polished, dopamine-rush production that reveres its source material while delivering a flawless contemporary sheen. It’s a dance formula executed with an artisan’s precision, offering a potent dose of unironic celebration.
