Beach Bunny and The Beths sparkle at Soma with Wishy

Teaming up for their 2026 US Tour, Chicago-based Beach Bunny and New Zealand-based The Beths threw an indie extravaganza at San Diego’s own Soma last Thursday, August 6th. Joined by Wishy, the sold-out show was chock-full of fans of all ages.

Good old classic indie, Wishy was distinctly jammy. Almost intense with shouty lyrics, their guitar riffs and gorgeous backing made for a great set.

Whimsically smooth and beautifully plucky, The Beths were a perfect precursor to Beach Bunny. Indie with bedroom pop influences, their vibes are perfectly soft and romantic. They’re beautifully fitting for long drives, or just swaying along to the beat as you listen. The band’s Kiwi origins almost elevate their vocals, with their accents adding a deeper twinge to their sound. Inciting a sense of childlike wonder, they are perfect for the whimsical and the yearners, or just the fan of the classic 2010s romcom. The band even went so far as to pull out plastic recorders onstage, a further tribute to their welcome silliness.

Beach Bunny is intensely powerful; fostering a space for positivity and acceptance through their music, they channel that 90s riot girl anger in a modern, more indie space. Their music a tribute to universal feminine experience; their songs tackle hard-hitting issues, like mental health, self-image, and heartbreak. Their music has a unique weight to it. Vocalist Lili Trifilio captures that gorgeous emotional vulnerability through her song, elevating their music even further. She almost has a sparkle to her voice. Altogether, Beach Bunny’s live performance is radiant. They even started an all-girls mosh pit to “Good Girls (Don’t Get Used).”

Beach Bunny played all the classics, between Sports, Painkiller, and even the “gay” version of Cloud 9. They also sprinkled in newer bangers, like Vertigo and Tunnel Vision. Their tour with The Beths spans until August 16th, with their last show in Seattle.
