Cameron Whitcomb delivers a heated show at SOMA with NEP and Liam St. John

On the night of October 6th, SOMA‘s main stage featured an energetic performance of country rock and folk. The energy in the room was indescribably high as Cameron Whitcomb brought his headlining tour to San Diego. Despite the relentless, muggy heat filling the room, thousands of fans packed the floor wall to wall. The night offered relentless stage presence, balancing storytelling with intimate fan connection across the unforgettable selection of songs curated for the setlist.

Kicking off the evening was Liam St. John, who set a cool, introspective tone across the stage with his soulful blend of country and blues. His magnetic charisma instantly drew the early crowd in, leading to a charming moment mid-set when a fan shouted out a specific song request from the floor; pleasantly surprised, Liam noted that since he rarely gets live requests, he would happily oblige. He closed out his captivating performance on a high note, pulling out a harmonica for his final track and leaving the venue thoroughly warmed up

Taking the stage next was NEP, who delivered a high-energy, infectious set that kept the room moving at full tilt. She showcased a vibrant mix of her latest releases alongside classic fan favorites, bringing a playful swagger to her performance. Before diving into her track about “Florida girls,” she joked with the audience about her home state of Florida, teasing how men there are constantly going viral for ridiculous antics and spawning the infamous “Florida Man” meme. She then led a massive singalong during the bridge of her song “Cottontail,” asking the entire crowd to chant the lines back to her repeatedly until the track reached its roaring finish.

The headline moment exploded into motion as Cameron hit the stage with an astonishing backflip, immediately bringing a frenetic pace that would linger for the rest of the night. His stage presence was utterly mesmerizing as he jumped and walked across every inch of the stage, taking every opportunity to interact directly with the front rows. Pausing between songs, he shared a deeply personal milestone, celebrating three years of sobriety and expressing his heartfelt gratitude by telling the audience that their unwavering support was his ultimate driving factor. He fully embraced the crowd’s various gifts thrown onto the stage, (a pair of sunglasses, a bracelet, and a glittery cowboy hat) as he wore them proudly throughout his performance.

As the temperature inside the venue continued to climb, Cameron proved his commitment to his fans’ safety by pausing the show when he noticed a concertgoer in the pit succumbing to the intense heat, ensuring they received immediate assistance before resuming the music. The production surged with dramatic pillars of pressurized smoke shooting into the air on heavy beat drops, complemented by a surreal moment when he asked the entire venue to turn on their phone lights to illuminate the dark hall. Highlight moments were him stripping his shirt off mid-set and his amazing cover of Wheatus’s Teenage Dirtbag. Before concluding his wild performance he hit one final, triumphant backflip and then left.
