Michl filled Space Bar with his soul-melting voice and hypnotic beats on Saturday, November 18th.
Pronounced “Michael,” Michl had the entire crowd entranced and hanging on his every word. The visuals that accompanied his goosebump-inducing vocals went along perfectly with the style of his music. They were a series of short films, colorful and postcard-like; all likely shot in Southern California, as palm trees, swimming pools, and pink skies seemed to be a recurring theme.
By the time he started his third song, “Broken Roots,” every single person in the crowd was fully engaged. The bass was powerful enough that I could feel my jacket vibrating and moving off of my back. Despite this, the sound at Space Bar that night was just as good, if not better, than any venue I’ve ever been to.
His lyrics are very emotional–so much so that while listening to him, I found myself thinking about how if I had just been through a breakup, I would have probably shed a tear or two. I also decided that his voice was even more incredible in person.
He’s only released six tracks on his self-titled debut EP, but those six are strong. Hailing from Riverside, he surprised me when he announced that this was his first show in San Diego. He mostly played all of his songs in succession, without any banter in between which seems to be parallel to the fact that not much is known about this up-and-comer.
He ended his set with what I would consider one of his bangers, “Dye Trying.” Everyone at Space Bar was eagerly singing every lyric along with him. Everyone definitely left Space Bar that night smiling and carrying around all of the feels that radiated from Michl’s mouth.
I was also fortunate enough to make the last few songs of Mack, who is supporting Michl on his current U.S. tour. This Los Angeles lady’s vocals absolutely blew me away, and I will definitely go out of my way to see both her and Michl any chance I get.
