We had the honor of chatting with Valgur ahead of their show at The Front Arte y Cultura on Thursday, August 29th, doors at 7pm. Their tour Por la Gracia de Dios has been wildly successful; here is our conversation with them:
ListenSD: Thank you Hugo and Elizabeth for your time, we know Valgur is a very successful project, you have been featured in Rolling Stone, and you’ve toured with bands such as Mint Field and you have an upcoming tour with Magdalene Bay.
For the listeners who are just getting to know you, can you tell us a little bit about the idea behind your concept? What inspired you to create your music along with a performance?
Valgur: We grew up in an evangelical environment, immersed in church life and performing in the praise group, this was our first musical encounter as well as training, the path to finding our musical and performing calling.
LSD: Music from Mexico has a great impact in the Latin communities in the United States, is there anything you’ve found surprising during this tour? Anything about the response or diversity of the audience?
Valgur: It is surprising to see the way in which the Latin community always creates bonds of brotherhood, lovingly welcoming us and even opening up the doors to their homes.
LSD: Do you have a totally unexpected musical influence?
Valgur: We really like Mexican ballads: Ricardo Montaner, Alejandro Sanz, Daniela Romo, Amanda Miguel, amongst others. Likewise we have profound respect for Christian music: Marcos Vidal, Torre Fuerte, Jesús Adrián Romero y Marcos Witt, and many others.
LSD: We love emerging projects here at ListenSD, is there anything we should keep an eye for? Anything you would recommend? We would also like to know if you have a favorite band or artist?
Valgur: We recommend listening to Palacio Infantil. We would consider Casiopea one of our favorite bands.
LSD: Lastly, Mexicans are fond of food, it’s a huge part of our culture, is there anything you’ve tried during this tour that was surprisingly delicious?
Valgur: Asian food in the United States is really good. We fell particularly in love with a Taiwanese restaurant in Los Angeles called Pine and Crane.

ListenSD: Gracias Elizabeth y Hugo por su tiempo, sabemos que Valgur es un proyecto exitoso, ya han aparecido en la revista Rolling Stone y además han estado de tour con bandas como Mint Field, y próximamente acompañarán a Magdalene Bay.
Para nuestros listeners que apenas comienzan a conocerlos o que recientemente los comenzaron a escuchar, ¿nos pueden hablar un poco acerca de la idea detrás de su concepto? ¿Qué los inspiró a crear su música y acompañarla con un performance?
Valgur: Crecimos en un entorno evangélico, inmersos en la vida eclesiástica tocando en el grupo de alabanza; este fue nuestro primer acercamiento y adiestramiento musical, y el sendero para encontrar nuestra vocación musical y performática.
LSD: La música de México tiene mucho impacto en las comunidades latinas de los Estados Unidos, ¿ha habido algo que les haya sorprendido durante este tour? ya sea la respuesta de la gente o quizá la diversidad del publico en sus conciertos?
Valgur: Nos sorprende la manera en la cual la comunidad latina siempre crea lazos de fraternidad, recibiéndonos siempre con cariño, abriéndonos incluso hasta las puertas de sus hogares.
LSD: ¿Tienen alguna influencia musical que sea totalmente inesperada?
Valgur: Nos gustan mucho las baladas en español: Ricardo Montaner, Alejandro Sanz, Daniela Romo, Amanda Miguel, entre otros. Así también tenemos admiración por la música cristiana: Marcos Vidal, Torre Fuerte, Jesús Adrián Romero y Marcos Witt, entre otros.
LSD: En ListenSD somos amantes de los proyectos emergentes, ¿hay alguna banda o proyecto emergente que nos puedan recomendar? Y me gustaría también preguntar si tienen algun artista o banda favoritos?
Valgur: Recomendamos escuchar a Palacio Infantil. Podríamos considerar a Casiopea una de nuestras bandas favoritas.
LSD: Para terminar, los mexicanos amamos la comida, es una gran parte de nuestra cultura, hay algo que hayan comido durante este tour que jamás hubieran pensado que fuera delicioso?
Valgur: La comida asiática en Estados Unidos es realmente buena. Particularmente quedamos enamorados de un lugar de comida taiwanesa llamado Pine and Crane en Los Ángeles.
