Meet Coliseo GNP Seguros: OCESA’s newest venue in Guadalajara, Jalisco.

Ahead of its grand opening, ListenSD spoke with TaAU architect Oscar Rodríguez Castañeda and Guillermo Parra, Director of International Events at OCESA about the making of Coliseo GNP Seguros. From the initial concept to the finished stadium, they all shared their insight on how the team navigated the venue’s evolution and vision.
All three parties had a similar way of starting the conversation, explaining the core problem they needed to solve: the legacy venue was showing its age, and its event logistics were severely outdated. “Events had to be built up and then torn down for each artist, which discouraged many acts from playing here,” Rodríguez noted. The grass was frequently damaged after every show. Despite these operational challenges, the venue remained a historic landmark deeply rooted in the city’s identity. For 55 years, it served as a cornerstone of local sports history, hosting the Estudiantes Tecos during their 37-year run in the Mexican professional soccer league, as well as games during the 1986 FIFA World Cup and iconic performances from major global acts like Shakira, Britney Spears, Soda Stereo, and Metallica.
To bridge its rich history with modern demands, OCESA, GNP Seguros, and the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara partnered with TaAU to execute a new vision: a state-of-the-art coliseum built primarily for live concerts while remaining fully capable of hosting soccer matches. All while preserving the soul of the original venue. Sustainability was central to this transformation, with Rodríguez emphasizing the team’s commitment to preserving as much of the existing structure as possible.
“For us architects, I think the most important thing when we design something is where we source our materials so we avoid polluting through transportation,” Rodríguez explained. “OCESA asked us to source as much material locally as possible, and as a result, 95% of the companies that worked on this project are based right here in Guadalajara.“
Rather than building from the ground up, the project was designed as a major overhaul, honoring a beloved stadium in the heart of Guadalajara. Preserving its history was always a central priority for the partnership, as both Oscar Rodríguez Castañeda and Memo Parra highlighted.
Renovations on Coliseo GNP Seguros began around November 2025, with an initial reopening date targeted for February 2027. However, thanks to a massive workforce and an impressive push, the team delivered opening night on September 22, shortening the project timeline by around five months.
Key upgrades for the venue included:
- Streamlined Entry Points: Redesigned access management across the entire venue to reduce wait times and improve crowd flow.
- New Pedestrian Plaza: Created a dedicated plaza surrounding the stadium to offer a welcoming pre-show environment.
- Fixed Stage Placement: Repositioned the stage further back into a permanent location, eliminating the need to tear down and rebuild setups for every show.
- Enhanced Fan Comfort: Upgraded overall amenities to deliver a more modern, comfortable experience for concertgoers.
- Quality Over Quantity: Prioritized fan experience and sightlines over simply maximizing seating capacity.

The finished project stands as an impressive 60,000 m² venue, seamlessly weaving together four primary areas to elevate crowd flow and fan experience during every show. Located on a privileged part of the city the Coliseo GNP Seguros was built to host top-tier global talent, starting with headliner Michael Bublé. Speaking on the opening night booking, Guillermo “Memo” Parra shared the story behind securing the international start: “We had a lot of luck because originally we had Rod Stewart who felt like a symbol for opening night but we all saw he had some health complications […] at the moment of the tour getting cancelled we were left with uncertainty… It’s not easy, mostly because of the time, to find the right artist but I think Michael Bublé is the perfect fit because of the genre he plays and the elegance needed for an opening night.”
He also shared the profile of acts expected to perform at Guadalajara’s newest venue: “Artists with tours that can fill multiple arenas or roughly 30,000 capacity stadiums in the US are certainly the ones that would be interested in playing the Coliseo, we have a chance to adapt to capacities from 14,000 to 26,000 persons and so this makes it a fun option for different kinds of artist and as you can see on the upcoming shows listing, it’s open for all genres“

At the center of the coliseo is the main bowl itself. While the original stadium structure was largely preserved, the interior received a comprehensive, modern upgrade. The entire Coliseo now features new numbered seating alongside redesigned joint staircases and rows for improved comfort and movement. Down on the floor, a specialized turf cover protects the grass, allowing the general admission area to function as either a standing pit or a reserved seated section depending on the tour’s production needs. To serve floor guests in General A, dedicated restroom and bar facilities were added to both sides of the stage. Something Rodriguez highlighted about the floor and it’s access through the plaza is the complete elimination of staircases, this in order to give disabled concertgoers the option of being on the floor too and not having to struggle with any stairs while enjoying the show.
Surrounding the bowl, a newly constructed roof now covers roughly three-quarters of the stands, spanning 5,000 m², while an all-new “ribbon” screen measuring 2 by 300 meters circles the venue, giving artists a massive canvas to incorporate into their visual production.
Perched above the stands, the team completely overhauled the luxury Palcos and Boxes. Sixty-six renovated Palcos now share three service areas and accommodate groups of varying sizes, featuring 52 suites with an 18-person capacity and 14 suites built for 36 guests. What makes these Palcos special is their intimacy; despite the Coliseo’s impressive scale from the outside, the interior design keeps sightlines remarkably tight, leaving guests feeling right on top of the stage. The adjacent Box sections offer a similar experience, placing 750 seats on each side with exclusive underlying lounges where concertgoers can mingle and connect throughout the night.

The next major feature of the project is the newly reimagined 10,000 m² pedestrian plaza surrounding the venue. Designed as a central hub for food and beverages, featuring 18 concession booths to offer fans a wide variety of options, this expansive space gives audiences a place to gather, relax, and connect before, during, or after the show. To further improve crowd comfort and flow, strategic restroom facilities were also integrated throughout the main lobby entrance and along the various entry tunnels.

One of the project’s most innovative additions is the huge lobby area, which bridges the parking facilities with the main plaza and the Coliseo itself. Spanning 15,000 m², the size of one of the university’s soccer field, this massive space features various brand-sponsored booths offering food, drinks, cocktails, and treats. With ample seating and a relaxed atmosphere, it serves as the ideal pre-show hangout spot for fans to either meet before heading to the access doors together or unwind and enjoy themselves while waiting for the clock to strike the time.

Finally, after months of hard work and extensive renovations, the official inauguration ceremony for Coliseo GNP Seguros took place on the morning of September 22 at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara. The event featured speeches from: Pablo Lemus Navarro Jalisco’s Governor; Juan José Frangie Zapopan’s Mayor; Alejandro Soberon Kuri OCESA’S founder and CEO, alongside key representatives from each partner organization: Antonio Leaño Reyes UAG’s Rector; Alejandro Díaz de León Carrillo Grupo BAL’s CCO and Luis Raúl Kuri GNP Seguros’ Director of Agent Channels.
And so, to mark the venue’s official rebirth, representatives from all parties involved took up scissors to cut the inaugural ribbon together.
With its official inauguration complete, Coliseo GNP Seguros stands ready to pave the way for a bright new era of touring acts and music fans alike. Hats off to the teams at TaAU, OCESA, Grupo BAR, GNP Seguros, and UAG for seamlessly bridging local legacy with cutting-edge production. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to visit Guadalajara, catching a show at this state-of-the-art coliseum should be right at the top of your list.
