It’s hard to muster up the energy to go to work sometimes — whether it be a cafe, bar, office, or even on stage. Despite a mellow crowd at the Casbah San Diego Saturday, June 29, Charly Bliss more than showed up to work. The uplifting pop/rock band was a ball of energy with singer Eva Hendricks literally bouncing up and down to songs off Guppy and new album Young Enough

Charly Bliss, based in New York City, is comprised of Hendricks, her brother Sam Hendricks (drums), Spencer Fox (guitar), and Dan Shure (bass). Their first release was the self-released EP A lot to Say and released the poppy, guitar-driven Guppy in 2017 — their first full length. With Hendricks’ saccharine, yet sassy vocals and hooks that stay in your head all day, Guppy is a likeable record reminiscent of 90s bands like Weezer and Veruca Salt.

Young Enough dropped with a different tone than Guppy. While Charly Bliss’ debut is soaring, constantly changing and energetic, Young Enough is mellower and more somber.

Charly Bliss’ performance had a set list with both a lot of songs off the two albums. Performances with songs you can sing along to and new tunes to explore make for some of the most engaging concerts as was the case here.

The first part of Charly Bliss’ set was dominated by Guppy songs — “Glitter,” “Black Hole” and “Ruby” were some highlights. Hendricks took a break jumping around while playing her Ernie Ball Music Man Guitar to talk about Young Enough.

“We’re super proud of it…we’re going to play a bunch of songs off Young Enough right now!” said Hendricks.

Charly Bliss launched into some of their singles off the new album like “Capacity.” Albeit less high energy than Guppy songs, “Capacity” and “Chatroom” are still catchy and fun listens.
