The Dimes at The Casbah: Glue, Glitter, and a New Generation of San Diego DIY

The Casbah has a legendary reputation for hosting career-defining residencies, but what The Dimes accomplished this January felt like a fresh blueprint for the local scene. This young powerhouse transformed our local venue into a center for community, inclusivity, and high-energy theatricality.
While the band’s aesthetic brings a fun spirit to the stage, their impact runs deeper. It is incredibly uplifting to see an up-and-coming generation of San Diego musicians who are as determined to spark social change as they are to master their craft. Songs like “Worm” offer a sharp, insightful look at the current state of the world, proving that The Dimes have the substance to match their style.
The success of this residency also highlights the vital ecosystem of San Diego music. The Casbah remains a cornerstone for growth, largely because of the intentional effort from Tim Pyles and Graham Stevens. Their commitment to giving young, talented bands a professional stage and a consistent space to play is exactly what allows the local scene to evolve. Without that mentorship and platform, the leap from a DIY project to a month-long residency wouldn’t be possible.

Night One: Mermaids
The residency opened with a mermaid theme, turning the Casbah’s dark interior into a vibrant underwater party.
The Erasers: They kicked things off with a set that was pure fun and high energy. Their sound is infectious, and they have a natural ability to command the room from the first chord.
Saint Misty: A truly incredible local artist, Saint Misty delivered a set of catchy pop tunes that were impossible to ignore. Her presence on the lineup reminds us why she is such an important fixture in the local scene right now.
The Dimes: Closing out the night, The Dimes proved their versatility. They surprised the crowd with a cool, driving cover of The Trammps’ “Disco Inferno” and an equally wild rendition of “Rock Lobster” that perfectly matched the night’s aquatic chaos.

Night Three: BBQ Bitch
For the finale, the theme shifted to “BBQ Bitch.” The crowd fully embraced the dress-up request, adding to the sense of shared experience that The Dimes foster so well.
Greyshade: This local favorite brought a grounded, gritty energy to the night. Their set felt essential, showcasing the depth of talent currently circulating in the SD circuit.
Rambo Pacino: Delivering another standout performance, Rambo Pacino kept the momentum high. They are a staple of the community, and their set was a reminder of why we love the local music scene.
The Dimes: Their final set of the residency was truly amazing. The Dimes are known for high-energy performances that swing effortlessly from riot grrrl intensity to queer yearning and total absurdism. They are here to make you feel something, and they succeed. A standout moment was “Worm,” an incredibly insightful track that captures the current state of the world with an impressive clarity and focus.

The Dimes are a movement focused on mindfulness and connection. Seeing a group of artists put so much emotion and effort—and literal glitter—into their shows is inspiring. They have a massive future ahead of them, and we can’t wait to see where they go next.
