San Diego’s The Frights Bring Surf Punk Energy to the Sold-Out Observatory North Park

As the crowd trickled in, the air inside the room grew dense with anticipation. The Observatory North Park filled from wall to wall with excited fans ready for a night of nostalgia, energy, and hometown pride.
With support from Archer Oh, the energy quickly picked up as the crowd got moving and the night officially kicked off.

On September 11, The Frights brought it back home with a sold-out hometown show at the Observatory, celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut album, You Are Going To Hate This, by performing the record in full.
Formed in 2012 in Poway, the surf punk band featuring guitarist/vocalist Mikey Carnevale, drummer Marc Finn, bassist Richard Dotson, and guitarist Jordan Clark returned to where it all began for a special night with their fans. The performance celebrated a decade of their music and connection to the San Diego scene.

There was never a moment when the crowd stood still, as if they had an endless supply of energy. The second “All I Need” kicked in, the venue erupted. Fans jumped, mosh pits opened up, and voices joined together as the crowd sang along with every word.
One thing about The Frights is that they know how to connect with an audience and turn a room full of people into one unified force. Their music carries a contagious energy, with every drumbeat and guitar chord pushing the crowd further into the moment. It felt as if the band’s sound took over the room, leaving everyone caught up in the intensity and excitement of the performance.
Fans moshed, crowd surfed, fell, got pulled from the pits, and immediately ran back in with excitement. The atmosphere was electrifying; a room full of sweaty, passionate fans completely immersed in the moment.

There was even a moment when a fan rushed the stage, landed a flip, and ran back into a crowd, a spontaneous burst of chaos that the band fully embraced. The Frights fed off the energy, matching the crowd’s excitement and letting the wild moments become part of the show.
After completing their run-through of You Are Going To Hate This, the band continued the night with fan favorites including “Crust Bucket,” “Freaking Me Out,” and “Submarines.” As the show moved to its finale, The Frights surprised the crowd with covers of “Enter Sandman,” “All Star,” “Santeria,” and “Mr. Brightside,” bringing the sold-out hometown celebration to an unforgettable close.
