An Evening of Goddesses and Grace: Sarah McLachlan & Allison Russell Live at The Shell
San Diego handed us a flawless summer night on August 2nd, but it was Sarah McLachlan who made time stand still. Presented by Live Nation, the iconic songstress took over The Rady Shell, proving once again why the bayfront venue is built for legendary evenings.
Allison Russell opened the evening with her Rainbow Coalition Band and, delivering a performance that radiated warmth from the moment she stepped on stage. Originating from Montreal, the singer-songwriter captivated the crowd with her magnetic charisma, an impeccable voice, and serious multi-instrumental chops, swapping between the banjo and the clarinet.
Between songs, Russell shared poignant personal stories about escaping a difficult past and discovering her voice through music. Her vulnerability hit deep, making her set truly heartwarming. She surrounded herself with a band of incredibly talented goddesses, as she warmly introduced them, and watching their collective energy was a pure joy.
When Sarah McLachlan took the stage, the production immediately set a breathtaking tone. For those of us who witness live music every single night, the lighting and visuals throughout her set stood out as particularly stunning. Vibrant colors washed over the stage at all times, with visuals behind McLachlan and her band playing an essential role in framing each song.
McLachlan embodies pure elegance and beauty as a performer, backing it up with an angelic voice that sounded pristine across the water. From the very beginning, she told the audience that her intent for the night was to make us feel like she was hugging us. She delivered on that promise completely. Between tracks, she interacted openly with the crowd, sharing intimate origin stories for every piece of music she played.
Her musical versatility anchored a flawless evening. She sat at the piano for an exquisite rendition of “Adia,” then picked up her guitar to power through classics like “Building a Mystery.” She also introduced new music, sharing personal songs honoring her daughters and her mother, alongside a deeply emotional track addressing women’s rights and the strange state of the world today. Powerful visuals of women’s rights marches, Rosa Parks, and pivotal moments from the fight for equality amplified the track’s impact.
While McLachlan went above and beyond to connect with everyone in attendance, my personal top moment came when she launched into “Sweet Surrender.” Hearing that iconic track—a song that has seen a million remixes over the years—brought back a rush of personal memories.
For the first song of the encore, McLachlan invited Allison Russell and her full band back to the stage for a glorious collaborative performance of “Sing Some More.” She followed that with “Angel,” sitting under a single spotlight at the piano to deliver a rendition so delicate, elegant, and emotional that it drew tears across the venue.
Before taking her final bow, McLachlan made sure to extend heartfelt thanks to her incredible backing band, her entire touring crew, and the working staff at The Shell.
Impeccable show, 10/10. I left feeling immensely lucky to have been in that crowd.
