Kyle Craft, one of rock and roll’s emerging artists treated the Casbah to an intimate concert filled with rock anthems and honest ballads.
Blending classic and current influences ranging from Alvvays to Riot Grrrl, Soft Lions started the night off playing songs off their latest album XOXO, as well as other tracks from their catalog. Keep an eye out for these San Diego locals as they continue developing songs in to their debut full length record.
To see an artist with immense star-power perform a show for a group of dedicated fans is always a special experience. Tonight was such an occasion; Kyle Craft and his band (playing as a six piece group) made every song shine at the Casbah. Full Circle Nightmare, his latest release on Sub Pop Records, focuses on sharp wordplay about shattered hearts paired with instrumentation ranging from the best parts of glam, Americana, and classic rock. Craft tied it all together is his unique and booming voice, capturing the whole crowd’s attention.
Starting off the set with a focus on the first half of Full Circle Nightmare, the band’s presence was felt immediately. Their energy was infectious, and that had translated over to the crowd. Moving and swinging to “Belmont (One Trick Pony)”, both the band and the audience were caught in the song’s hook, making it one of the highlights of the night.
After being called back for an encore, Craft ended with a heartfelt cover of Harry Nilsson’s “Without You.” His voice fit the achingly beautiful melody of Nilsson’s vocals perfectly, which is no small feat. With Full Circle Nightmare being released just last month and the band’s touring schedule stretching all over the world (including a supporting slot for Dr. Dog), the future for Kyle Craft looks very bright.
