Nineteen-year-old Khalid gave a powerful performance at his sold out House of Blues San Diego show.

Tuesday, July 18, was one of Khalid’s two sold-out San Diego shows for his American Teen tour. The El Paso, Texas teen delivered an incredible R&B show, complete with light boxes, dancers, and falling confetti.

When the first notes of “American Teen” rang out, the screams began and only grew louder as the night progressed. The American teen’s buttery smooth vocals swooped and glided over every note. His legion of fans couldn’t help but sing every note along with him. Two dancers dressed as cheerleaders added the grand spectacle of the performance.

Khalid’s background in theater and performing was evident after witnessing his powerful stage presence. Smooth dance moves and an infectious smile guided the set through higher energy, if heartbreaking, pieces such as “Another Sad Love Song” and “Cold Blooded.”

The night took a heavier turn as a stool was brought out and Khalid crooned his way through heartbreak in “Shot Down,” while emotion seeped into every note through the powerful “Angels” (his favorite song off the album).

The set picked back up with “Keep Me” and “Winter” before really hitting a high note with his breakout hit “Location.” The song, which as of writing has just under 250 million plays on Spotify, brought the return of one of the earlier dancers in a highly choreographed performance.

A brief, false end of the night gave way to Calvin Harris’s “Rollin” and finally ending with “Young, Dumb, and Broke” and a cloud of red, white, and blue confetti.

If you missed this up-and-coming teen during both of his sold out San Diego shows, be sure to check out his critically-acclaimed album, American Teen, and keep an eye out for the next time he rolls through. This is certainly just the beginning for him.
