Julian Lage Quartet: A Musical Conversation at UCSD Epstein Amphitheatre

There’s something special about watching musicians who seem to understand one another so naturally. At the Epstein Family Amphitheater, the Julian Lage Quartet shared an evening of instrumental music that felt expressive, adventurous, and deeply connected.

Lage’s guitar playing is both precise and full of feeling. His melodies can be delicate and reflective, then move into something brighter and more energetic. There’s an ease to the way he plays that draws you in, inviting you to follow wherever the music goes.

Alongside him, keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Jorge Roeder, and drummer Kenny Wollesen each brought their own character to the quartet. Medeski’s keys added color and atmosphere, while Roeder’s bass and Wollesen’s drums gave the music a rhythmic foundation with room to move.

Drawing from jazz, blues, folk, and improvisation, the quartet’s music doesn’t feel confined to one style. Without lyrics, the instruments carry the emotion, responding to one another and telling their own stories.

At the heart of the performance was a sense of conversation: four musicians listening, responding, and finding their way through the music together. It made for an evening that invited you to slow down and listen a little closer.
