CRSSD Fest packed Waterfront Park for their 10th Anniversary
Perhaps because their festival lineups feature so much new talent alongside well-known artists, CRSSD still feels brand new, like something the San Diego dance music scene just got turned on to. But then ten years flies by and suddenly it’s clear, CRSSD has established itself as a full-fledged institution. In a time where many music festivals have had difficulty navigating economic and attendance issues, the CRSSD crowd shows up time and time again to dance the weekend away to some of the best house & techno acts and DJs around.
Although this was the Spring edition of the festival, the weather remained decidedly wintery ahead of the approaching equinox. Partygoers who would have been perfectly comfortable in the club needed to keep on dancin’ after the sun went down and the breeze picked up, with statement coats being the fashion accessory of choice over the weekend. As always, though, CRSSD attendees brought their perma-grins and good vibes filled to overflowing.
The 10th anniversary Spring edition revealed a meticulously engineered event. The Palms, City Steps, and Ocean View stages were not simply locations, but distinct sonic environments. Each stage’s sound system and visual design were tailored to match its intended atmosphere. The Palms delivered a warm, enveloping sonic experience, while City Steps offered a sharper, more focused output, and Ocean View, a wide, expansive soundscape that complimented the open air feel. This level of sonic specificity is a testament to the festival’s technical planning.
The programming demonstrated a commendable range of musical styles and a conscious effort to bridge generations. Acts like Fleur Shore and Rene Wise represented the cutting edge of contemporary techno, while veterans like Rødhåd, Green Velvet, and Sasha & Digweed provided a historical context, showcasing the evolution of electronic music. This multigenerational approach created a dynamic and engaging experience for attendees with varying musical backgrounds.
The festival’s commitment to showcasing female artists was notable. The inclusion of Nicole Moudaber, Anfisa Letyago, and Vavinski alongside headliners like Justice and Fisher highlighted a diverse lineup. This balanced representation reflects a thoughtful approach to artist selection, moving beyond simple popularity to include a broader spectrum of talent. The crowd favorites were well chosen, and the technical execution of each set was of high quality.
Once again, it’s safe to say that the 10th anniversary of CRSSD was a well-executed event that demonstrated a genuine passion for electronic music. The carefully curated stages, diverse artist lineup, and attention to detail created yet another memorable experience.
