Sylvan Esso

That over-hyped solar eclipse had nothing on the dazzling spectacle of indie-pop elation that was Sylvan Esso at The Observatory North Park.

On Saturday, August 26th, the line around the block of The Observatory consisted of a famished pre-millennial pack of wolves excited to see heavyweights Sylvan Esso instead of Mayweather vs. McGregor. The show was very SOLD OUT. Desperate, well-dressed hipster kids kept hassling me for extra tickets on my way inside the venue. Despite the ass-kicking I received 20 minutes earlier by the Chille Relleno at City Tacos, I pushed the kids aside and made my way to the front of the pack.

The performance began with the antique radio hiss of the first track off their stellar new album What Now. This was not an audience of the jaded un-indoctrinated. All 1,100 plus music fans were singing the words to every song from the very moment a wisp of air exhaled out of singer Amelia Meath’s flawless vocal chords.

After the third song in, the floor was pulsing so hard I could feel my hair flying up like Doc Brown in Back to the Future!

“Now aren’t you gonna do the dance for the camera/Dance for your mama/Dance with a kick jump twist.”

Yes Amelia, we are swooning collectively and you have us at your command! Then that Postal Service meets Mario Kart beat drops from mastermind producer Nick Sanborn and the crowd jumps up and down in a frenzy. Fuck solar, someone invent a Sylvan Esso Generator that harnesses the energy from the crowd and power the city!
