Considering Bombay Bicycle Club’s style of music fits in nicely with the local San Diego vibe, it’s surprising Thursday marked the band’s first show in town. Playing The Belly Up on the Thursday night between Coachella weekends, (where it’s impossible to see every show you’d like), the band filled the venue nicely with fans ready to absorb every note of the band’s newest album.

Following an overly synthesized set from opener band Royal Canoe, Bombay Bicycle Club, playing with a few extra members, played a strong, consistent set. Jack Steadman, the lead singer, seemed genuinely happy to be playing, encouraging active participation by the sold-out crowd. The band played through much of So Long, See You Tomorrow, interspersing old favorites throughout the set, which was also highlighted by “Carry Me”, the band’s 2013 single, and “Ivy and Gold”, off of their 2010 album Flaws.

While the show was much more subdued than the previous night’s coordinated chaos of Cage the Elephant, the show was solid from start to finish, the crowd grooving along with each beat. Given the show- and the band’s- continued success, hopefully a return visit to our fair city will happen soon.
