Spooky Cigarette, a self-described “New/No Wave” musical project originating from San Diego formed in the fall of 2015, released their new song “Normal” this Wednesday, April 27, 2016, to much anticipation. Frontman Frank Mindingall (of Northern Tigers, Beaters), Bassist- Jakob McWhinney (of bands Space Heat and the Soaks), Skylar Epper (of Via Meteor), and Danny Gallo (formerly of Hills Like Elephants) “fully realize social and sexual identity and reconcile all time lost” in their debut EP As Loud As I Can, which will be released May 20th. San Diego Citybeat praises them for their name and their “equal parts Future Islands and Digital Leather – with a little bit of Gary Wilson weirdness thrown in,” and Max Sounds describes their music as showing “an obvious love of late 70’s/early 80’s post-punk/no-wave.” Overall, San Diego’s newest musical project has a lot to show us about taking inspiration from traditional favorites and making a whole new style thereof.
