Artist: Nick Murphy
Title: “Medication”
Release Date: October 10, 2017
Label: Opulent Records/Downtown/Interscope Records

Nick Murphy, formerly known as Chet Faker, releases his new single “Medication.”

It’s been three years since Chet Faker’s 2014 release Built On Glass—an album that received mass critical acclaim, with the track “Gold” hitting more than 100 million views on YouTube. The release of his Missing Link EP in May earlier this year marked the beginning of Nick Murphy leaving the Faker name behind, and becoming himself.

While the moniker has changed, the body-swaying soulful voice remains. “Medication” affirms that his evolution as an artist is still in its early stages. Murphy’s metamorphosis has been timed perfectly to coincide with his U.S. tour.

A pulsing wave of bass drives the rhythm of “Medication.” The pre-chorus has a Gregorian chant feel in a room full of technology, then the chorus bursts again with stirring vocals. “Medication” has a sense of urgency, one to come to an answer, to cure an ill. The shades of the chords are tinted, allowing for that sense to be carried through by the progression of notes. Murphy’s talent for sonic scenery persists throughout.

“Medication” is available on Spotify and Soundcloud. You can catch Nick Murphy this Saturday, October 21st at the Observatory.
