Mystic Braves

Mystic Braves

By: Amanda Martinek

Previously known as Blackfeet Braves, the now (very) Mystic Braves played one of ListenSD’s favorite joints Soda Bar last Saturday March 8th, with Muscle Beech and Amerikan Bear in support.

Parts of a crowd sauntered in fashionably on-time to catch the first act Muscle Beech, a ‘wave-gaze’ group from my neck of the woods (somewhere in North County). Their surf inspired, fast paced sounds ripped and I wish more people were there to listen. Check out their EP here. Next up Amerikan Bear took the stage, a band you were supposed to see at a ListenSD Local Obsession Night (and couldn’t because of an illness) but hopefully a band you’ll catch in the future.  They are an amazing, old-timey, pyschelic dream, with instruments played chest high, powerful focals and a dimly lit stage. I was throughly entertained. Listen to more of their music here.

But the stars of the night were the very mystic Mystic Braves. Decked out in full pyschdelic ’60s garb with paisley tops, pointy black leather boots and a ring collection I envy, they were extremely groovy. They played tracks from their 2012 Self Titled album, with the crowd literally screaming for them to play favorite “Trippin’ Like I Do” (although it was mainly two people shouting “TRIPPING!” so maybe they were actually just letting everyone know their state of mind). Either way, the trippers of San Diego had a silly, pyschedelic time. Their new LP Desert Island will be out Apirl 14th and you can catch them next weekend March 22-23 at BURGERAMA or next month at Desert Daze on April 16th.
