House of Blues San Diego emphasizes Southern flavor in their new menu, and it satisfies every taste bud.

house of blues menuWhen our friends at House of Blues shared the news that they had some new menu items, I needed to try ‘em as soon as possible. Though their unique live entertainment is always my main focus, the food has been taking the center stage for quite some time (and it never disappoints). I invited my fun friend Rachel along, knowing that she would love the fan favorites (we will get to you, bread pudding) and be more than happy to sample the new Southern-inspired menu dishes.

We were greeted by our bouncy and lovely server Alyssa, who encouraged us to embark on our carb-laden journey and swiftly knew exactly what we needed after a long day at work: the Havana Mojito and Strawberry Fields cocktail. First appetizer up was the Margherita Flatbread. Rachel loved the layers of feta cheese with mozzarella, roasted garlic, and balsamic tomato. Just as we were getting warmed up, out came the huge dish of BBQ Brisket Nachos. Slow-smoked BBQ brisket, house-cut tortilla chips, aged cheddar, and avocado dance together in a party of complementary flavors and textures. This dish alone can feed a pair for days, but we put a pretty solid dent in it and enjoyed it at home for the rest of the week.

Next up was the decadent Country Fried Steak. The flat iron steak was smothered in andouille country gravy and I couldn’t help but scoop up every last bite of the savory garlic mashed potatoes and herb salad. Shortly after, Alyssa brought out The Yardbird, a bourbon-butter-brushed fried chicken breast sandwich so flavorful and just downright scrumptious. The sandwich was complemented with slaw, buffalo aioli, and crunchy dill pickles. Like the other items mentioned, it’s great for solo eating if you are a hungry bird, or sharing with a friend. To fully solidify our night of decadence and luxury, we opted for mac and cheese as the side instead of fries.

For dessert, we had both the ooey gooey Skillet Cookie and the pillowy and sweet Bourbon Bread Pudding. I couldn’t wait to watch Rachel melt into heaven as she tried the out-of-this-world caramel sauce for the first time. I may have even dipped my chicken in it days later, with zero shame.

We highly enjoyed the live music on the Salvation Stage, where the great Robin Henkel entertained us.
