Welcome to this month’s Local San Diego Playlist, your reverse periscope into the depths of our fair city’s vibrant indie scene.
It’s been a while, and I apologize for that… I made sure to make up for it in the form of even MORE tasty San Diego bred jams. From Fake Tides’ brand new Parquet Courts meets B-52’s banger ‘Ctrl’, the sugary dream pop of ex-Garden Echo members Naïvetè, the jittery, infectious dance pop of Twin Ritual, and the high octane rock and roll of SIXES (who play Whistle Stop on 11/1) we have all your bases covered. As you roll out to your chosen Halloween extravaganza just press play and submit to 24 tracks sure to turn it up.
This month we highlight local noise rock heavyweights Quali. Quali is a musicians band. One that blends shoegaze textures with mathy refrains, sprawling structures and punishing guitars. Their second album, ‘Awaken The Quietus‘, released earlier this month, carries on that tradition. Singer Isaiah Nery’s whispered, lightly treated vocals stand apart from the holy cacophony of their sound. They feel like some fragile, life-bearing thing buried amidst a jagged, furious and meticulously layered wall of sound, whose each shriek of feedback, effected buzz, or circular riff seems timed and performed to achieve the maximum desired outcome. Be that elation, absolution, or abrasion… Buy the new album here, and check out their equally stunning debut ‘The Familiar And The Other‘ here.
